Carrboro's Growth

My long-range development desire for all of Carrboro is that any residential and commercial developments that are developed have four critical characteristics:

1) Walkability;
2) Connectivity;
3) Affordability in price for purchase; and
4) Economic sustainability.

I will continue to work to insure an increase in affordable and moderately priced homes. I am an advocate in placing additional commercial development in those areas where it is appropriate in the northern part of Carrboro since there is very little commercial and retail development in that area. I support the ongoing work of the Northern Transition Area Advisory Committee will provide such suggestions for doing so in that zoning area.

The type of growth in Carrboro I support is:

1) Commercial development in the appropriate locations in the northern area, which includes both retail and business while protecting the environmentally and ecologically sensitive areas;

2) Both office and retail development where appropriate, near major intersections, to encourage employers and employees to use mass transit and to abandon single occupancy vehicles;

3) Mixed use developments that include transportation nodes, bikeways, pedestrian pathways that link up with other developments in the area, that ultimately results in connectivity with the rest of Carrboro.

4) More affordable housing and housing within the 120% to 140% median income range.

5) More compact subdivisions that have houses on smaller footprints and that include mass transit nodes, while protecting those areas that are environmentally sensitive;

6) Diverse retail space of various sizes that the residents want;

7) Mixed use development which includes both residential and commercial.
